TEAS math formulas and conversions: the cheat sheet
The TEAS math section gives you 57 minutes for 38 questions, and an on-screen calculator. The calculator handles the arithmetic; the points come from knowing which formula to use and setting it up correctly the first time. This sheet collects the formulas and conversions that come up across numbers and algebra and measurement and data, with a short worked example for each kind of problem.
Fractions, decimals and percents
Most TEAS math rests on moving smoothly between the three forms of the same number.
| To change… | Do this | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fraction → decimal | Divide the top by the bottom | 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 |
| Decimal → percent | Multiply by 100 (move the point two places right) | 0.375 = 37.5% |
| Percent → decimal | Divide by 100 | 6.5% = 0.065 |
| Decimal → fraction | Write over the place value, then simplify | 0.45 = 45/100 = 9/20 |
| Mixed number → improper | Whole × denominator + numerator, over the denominator | 2 3/4 = 11/4 |
To compare or order numbers in mixed forms, convert them all to decimals first. To add or subtract fractions, find a common denominator; to multiply, multiply straight across; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Practice the order of operations (parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division left to right, addition and subtraction left to right) until it is automatic, because the calculator follows your keystrokes, not the rules.
Percent problems
Every percent question is a version of one sentence: part = percent × whole. Decide which of the three is missing.
- Find the part: 15% of 240 = 0.15 × 240 = 36.
- Find the percent: 18 is what percent of 72? 18 ÷ 72 = 0.25 = 25%.
- Find the whole: 42 is 35% of what? 42 ÷ 0.35 = 120.
Percent change = (new − original) ÷ original × 100. A price that rises from $40 to $46 changed by 6 ÷ 40 = 15%. Divide by the original value, not the new one; that is the most common trap. For a discount followed by tax, apply each step to the running total: $80 with 25% off is $60, and 5% tax on $60 makes $63.
Ratios, proportions and rates
Set a proportion up with matching units in matching positions, then cross-multiply.
Example. A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for 24 cookies. How much flour for 40 cookies? 3/24 = x/40, so 24x = 120 and x = 5 cups.
A rate is a ratio with different units (miles per hour, dollars per pound). Distance = rate × time. A unit rate puts 1 in the denominator: $7.50 for 3 pounds is $2.50 per pound. When a question asks which deal is better, compare unit rates.
Equations, inequalities and word problems
Solve a one-variable equation by undoing operations in reverse order, doing the same thing to both sides: 4x − 7 = 21 → 4x = 28 → x = 7. Inequalities work the same way with one extra rule: multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number flips the sign (−2x > 10 becomes x < −5).
For word problems, translate phrase by phrase: "is" means =, "of" usually means ×, "more than" means +, "less than" reverses order (5 less than a number is n − 5). Estimate first so you can catch an answer that is off by a factor of ten. When a question says "about" or "approximately", round early and pick the closest option.
Geometry formulas
| Shape | Perimeter or circumference | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | P = 2l + 2w | A = l × w |
| Square | P = 4s | A = s² |
| Triangle | P = a + b + c | A = ½ × b × h |
| Circle | C = 2πr = πd | A = πr² |
| Trapezoid | add the four sides | A = ½ × (b₁ + b₂) × h |
| Solid | Volume |
|---|---|
| Rectangular prism (box) | V = l × w × h |
| Cube | V = s³ |
| Cylinder | V = πr²h |
| Sphere | V = (4/3)πr³ |
| Cone | V = (1/3)πr²h |
Watch the units: perimeter is in units, area in square units, volume in cubic units. If a circle question gives the diameter, halve it before using πr². Use π ≈ 3.14 unless the question says otherwise.
Statistics and data
- Mean: add the values, divide by how many there are.
- Median: the middle value once the list is in order; with an even count, the mean of the two middle values.
- Mode: the value that appears most often (there can be more than one, or none).
- Range: largest minus smallest.
An outlier pulls the mean toward it but barely moves the median, which is why median is the better summary of skewed data such as incomes or hospital stays. On graphs, read the axis labels and units before the bars. When two variables rise together the correlation is positive; when one rises as the other falls it is negative. The independent variable is the one that is changed or chosen; the dependent variable is the one measured.
Unit conversions to know by heart
| US standard | Metric and cross-system | Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ft = 12 in | 1 in = 2.54 cm | °F = (9/5 × °C) + 32 |
| 1 yd = 3 ft | 1 kg = 2.2 lb | °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 |
| 1 mile = 5,280 ft | 1 L = 1,000 mL | Water freezes: 0 °C = 32 °F |
| 1 lb = 16 oz | 1 tsp = 5 mL · 1 tbsp = 15 mL | Water boils: 100 °C = 212 °F |
| 1 cup = 8 fl oz | 1 fl oz ≈ 30 mL | Body temperature: 37 °C ≈ 98.6 °F |
Within the metric system, each prefix step is a factor of 10: kilo (1,000), hecto, deka, base unit, deci, centi (1/100), milli (1/1,000). Convert with a chain of fractions so units cancel: 3.5 ft × 12 in/ft × 2.54 cm/in = 106.68 cm. If the units in your setup do not cancel to the units asked for, the setup is wrong. Try the TEAS math practice set to drill these with full steps.

Question 1 of 5 · Numbers and Algebra
During a 12-hour shift, a nurse spends 9 hours in direct patient care. What percent of the shift is direct patient care?
- 25%
- 133%
- 75%
- 7.5%
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: C
Part over whole is 9/12 = 0.75 = 75%. The value 25% is the part of the shift NOT spent in direct care, 133% divides the whole by the part (12 ÷ 9), and 7.5% moves the decimal point only one place.
Step by step
- Write the part over the whole: 9/12.
- Simplify: 9/12 = 3/4.
- Divide: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
- Change to a percent: 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
Question 2 of 5 · Measurement and Data
For intake and output, a patient drank 2.5 cups of broth. Using 1 cup = 8 fl oz and 1 fl oz ≈ 30 mL, how many milliliters should be recorded?
- 600 mL
- 20 mL
- 75 mL
- 240 mL
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: A
Chain the two conversions: 2.5 cups = 20 fl oz, and 20 × 30 = 600 mL. 20 stops at fluid ounces, 75 mL skips the cups-to-ounces step, and 240 mL is the volume of only one cup.
Step by step
- Cups to fluid ounces: 2.5 cups × 8 fl oz/cup = 20 fl oz.
- Fluid ounces to milliliters: 20 fl oz × 30 mL/fl oz = 600 mL.
Question 3 of 5 · Numbers and Algebra
An architect builds a model of a clinic at a scale of 1 : 200. The model is 18 centimeters tall. How tall is the real building, in meters? (1 m = 100 cm)
- 3,600 m
- 3.6 m
- 360 m
- 36 m
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: D
Real height = 18 cm × 200 = 3,600 cm, and 3,600 cm ÷ 100 = 36 m. The value 3,600 m forgets to convert centimeters to meters; 3.6 m and 360 m move the decimal point the wrong number of places in the conversion.
Step by step
- A 1 : 200 scale means real size = 200 × model size.
- 18 cm × 200 = 3,600 cm.
- Convert: 3,600 cm ÷ 100 cm per m = 36 m.
Question 4 of 5 · Measurement and Data
An antibiotic infuses at 50 mL/hr for 2 hours 30 minutes. How many milliliters are infused in total?
- 115 mL
- 125 mL
- 1,500 mL
- 100 mL
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: B
30 minutes is half an hour, so the time is 2.5 hr and 50 × 2.5 = 125 mL. 115 mL treats 2 hr 30 min as 2.3 hr, 100 mL ignores the 30 minutes, and 1,500 mL multiplies by 30 minutes as if they were hours.
Step by step
- Change the time to hours: 30 min = 30/60 = 0.5 hr, so the time is 2.5 hr.
- Volume = rate × time = 50 mL/hr × 2.5 hr = 125 mL.
Question 5 of 5 · Numbers and Algebra
A 12-pack of sparkling water costs $5.40, and an 18-pack of the same water costs $7.38. Which is the better buy per can, and by how much?
- 18-pack, by $0.04 per can
- 12-pack, by $0.04 per can
- They cost the same per can
- 18-pack, by $1.98 per can
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: A
Unit prices: $5.40 ÷ 12 = $0.45 per can and $7.38 ÷ 18 = $0.41 per can, so the 18-pack is cheaper by $0.04 per can. Choosing the 12-pack confuses the lower total price with the lower unit price; $1.98 is the difference in total price, not per can.
Step by step
- 12-pack unit price: $5.40 ÷ 12 = $0.45 per can.
- 18-pack unit price: $7.38 ÷ 18 = $0.41 per can.
- Compare: $0.45 − $0.41 = $0.04, so the 18-pack is cheaper by $0.04 per can.
